Has anyone ever began monthly payments on a settlement agreement offered by a bill collector, and later the collector still took you to court for the full amount of the debt anyway? Or did the collector sell the debt to another collection office before your last payment date? Can they do this legally even if they’ve put it in writing?

The Insurance policy is from the flight school of aircraft involved in accident. Small settlement of $100,000., after attorney fees from civil suit (which was dropped), has brought that down to half which was received. We are wondering if we need to paid state or federal taxes on settlement, and if so, on what figure. Any information would greatly be appreciated, Thank you.

Isn’t there some kind of proof even a lawyer has to show his client or whomever, if he is making a deposit 4 them, of how much it was ?
Hypothetically, if he was supposed to deposit $50,000.00 & there was only $43000.00 deposited, (he’s already paid in full) where do you go from here?

This is money I will be recieveing from our auto insurance under our uninsured motorist coverage. I was hit by a drunk driver who had no insurance. I was physically drug down the road about 40ft until I was able to free myself from the vehicle. However we have two uninsured policys for $100,000 that our lawyer is filing a claim with. I have a sprained knee, and a severely strained neck and back that has required shots to cope with the sever pain. I was just wanting to know if once we do actually get paid and the lawyer gets his third if we then have to pay taxes on the remainder?

Wife was in an auto accident. Our attorney negotiated a small settlement with the insurance company. IRS claims we owe tax on the settlement because our attorney reported the settlement amount as nonemplyoyee compensation paid to us. I thought insurance settlements were nontaxabel income. Need help or the proper publication in the tax code to cite when I respond to the IRS. Thanks

My husband has created fraudulent debts to make it look like I cannot cash out the equity in our home. Its a long story and has cost me over $4k in attny fees to get awarded very basic equity that he wants to make in structured monthly payments. There is a clause in my divorce papers that says bankruptcy is not an release for this debt. However, he has already made it clear he has no intention of making any of the monthly payments. His checking acct is continually overdrawn and he rarely pays banks and creditors on time, so there is little reason to believe I will get my money. I am wondering what experience you have to help me? I have requested a lein on the house (he wants it), an insurance policy or some other penalty be attached to non-payment, I also suggested there be a “bonus” for regular monthly payments (say a $1000 less owed). But my attorney has not responded to any of these saying “he has to pay”. But I know better. What did you do to protect yourself?
